Years 5 and 6 Sex and Relationship Education Lessons
Dear Parents/Carers,
Over the next term, the children in Years 5 and 6 will be taking part in lessons, which relate specifically to themes from our Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) Programme. Staff will be teaching alongside Laura Devereaux, our School Nurse.
- For Year 5, the whole class will be looking at hygiene within the context of growing up. For the girls there will be a separate session about menstruation (periods). This will all be taking place on Wednesday 5th June 2024.
- For Year 6, topics will include puberty, human reproduction, general hygiene and discussions about relationships. In addition, Year 6 will also take part in a performance and workshop lead by Loudmouth Theatre Company entitled 'My Mate Fancies You'. This is an interactive educational programme, which explores the sometimes daunting physical and emotional changes associated with puberty and helps children prepared for a smooth transition to secondary school. We have worked with Loudmouth for a number of years and hold their work in high regard. Year 6 will be taking part in their Loudmouth session on Tuesday 18th June 2024 and will be working with our School Nurse on Monday 24th June 2024.
Some parents may wish to know more about the programmes. There is information about the workshop on the Loudmouth website www.loudmouth.co.uk. Laura is offering a drop in session for both Year 5 and 6 parents who wish to talk to her or have any questions. Alternatively she can be contacted by telephone on 07976 567932, alternatively via email on laura.devereaux@nhs.net.
The drop in session for parents will be in the bungalow. Year 5 on Thursday 23rd May 2024 from 2.45pm - 3.15pm. The Year 6 drop in session will be Thursday 20th June 2024 from 2.45pm - 3.15pm.
We hope that you will take the time to discuss with your child what they have been doing in school. It is however your right to request that your child does not take part in aspects of these sessions. Our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) Policy is available on our website - https://theridge.sch.life/page/detail/policies-1 .
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely
