Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Throughout the year, Year 5 pupils have the opportunity to take part in a range of fun and challenging activities that allows them to develop a deeper understanding of a range of relevant subjects that help them to better understand and appreciate the world in which they live.

We begin the year by exploring the fascinating life and times of the Victorians and how their inventions and advancement provides inspiration for how we live today. Children find out society, the class system, child labour and reforms, life in the workhouse, inventions and the Great Exhibition. The theme is enhanced by a visit to The Black Country Living Museum, where children can experience day-to-day life in a Victorian Black Country town.

Throughout the Spring Term, our theme begins in Hollywood where children learn about the birth of early cinema, special effects, costumes, film making and production. This theme is closely linked with ICT and Science and enables children to work in front of, and behind, the camera to produce their own cinematic experiences! The second half of term focuses on Bollywood and the modernisation of India and its culture, traditions, art and religion. Children visit a Hindu Temple to ask questions and explore the ways in which people from other cultures express their faith in our locality.

The year ends with our 'All at Sea' theme. Children become passengers upon the R.M.S. Titanic and are welcomed aboard by Captain Smith, who explains the journey to New York and encourages children to send letters on our last stop in Queenstown! Poster, newspaper reports, iceberg collages and a drama workshop give children a better understanding of what life aboard this magnificent ship would have been like. Children also explore the geographical features of our coastline, the effect of tourism on seaside towns and planning for a happy and safe holiday with a visit from the RNLI.

These themes are only a part of the wide and varied range of activities that take place in our classroom. Further information is available on our termly newsletter. If you have any further questions about our Year 5 timetable, please feel free to pop in and see me and the end of the school day!
