A message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

The school days continue to be busy and action-packed.  I am delighted to inform you that our Year 5 and 6 team have reached the finals of the Black Country Games Tag Rugby competition after an exciting morning this week competing against other primary schools across the region.  A huge thank you to the parents for transporting the children to this event, we do appreciate your support.  Having reflected on the term thus far, we have made the decision to provide transport to sporting events where they take place during school hours.  We will also provide the necessary information regarding timings and requirements to you as early as is possible.

Year 6 had a brilliant time at Ridgewood on Wednesday afternoon where we were invited to be part of an author meet.  Children met with Jack Mackey, writer of Gloam which has been named a Sunday Times Children's Book of the Week.

Jack read the introduction to his book, gave the children tips on how to become an author and answered lots of questions about what inspired him to write the horror story.

Some children purchased a copy of Gloam which they had signed by him at the end.  It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon and year 6 were a credit to us.

It was lovely to see so many of you attending the family learning with Year 3 and 4 this week.  The Year 5 and 6 session takes place next week on Wednesday 22nd October.

Thank you for continuing to support us with the use of Class Dojo.  Please do email the school on info@ridge.dudley.sch.uk if you need to contact the class teacher as they are unable to read or access these messages during the day when they are teaching.

The deadline for the 500 words competition is fast approaching.  please could any entries be brought to me by the end of the school day, Monday 3 November.

Cat Eccles MP Christmas Card Competition 2025

We have another competition for anyone who wishes to design a Christmas card for our MP Cat Eccles – information is below:

As your local MP, I have had the privilege of visiting many schools across Stourbridge, Brierley Hill and Netherton over the last twelve months. Every time I have been taken on a tour,  I've always been struck by the level of fantastic art on display around our school buildings.

That's why this year; I’m looking for a talented young artist from our constituency to design my Christmas card for the festive season.

I trust in the creativity of our young people, and so rather than use a stock image of Parliament or Big Ben this Christmas, I’d much prefer a card created by one of our brilliant local students!

How to enter

  • You must live and attend a school in the Stourbridge constituency, including Netherton and Brierley Hill (check via postcode here)
  • Open to all from Reception through Year 9
  • Theme: Christmas (no strict rules beyond that)
  • Max size: A4; use pens, pencils, crayons
  • Please do not attach items (glitter, cotton, etc)
  • Do not fold the artwork
  • On the reverse: student name, date of birth, school (so works don’t get lost)
  • Artwork cannot be returned
  • The judging decision is final

Entries must be sent to my constituency office by 5.30 pm, Monday 17 November.

Please send all artwork in an envelope via FREEPOST CAT ECCLES MP (so you don’t have to pay).

The winner will be announced Thursday 20th November, and their school will be contacted.

The chosen design will be sent to all my contacts this Christmas, and the winner, plus their family, will be invited to visit the Palace of Westminster in time to see the Parliamentary Christmas Markets!

I look forward to seeing your creativity.

Best wishes,

Cat

Prefects

I will be looking to appoint Prefects to successful children from Year 6.  if your child is in Year 6 and wishes to be considered for the post of Prefect at The Ridge, they will need to apply in writing to me outlining their skills and qualities which make them a good candidate for the role of Prefect.  Please could the application be sent to me by Wednesday 5 November.  Myself, Mrs Hadley and Miss Crowson will interview the applicants the following week.

Home-based learning

I will be introducing small home-based learning tasks for classes which will be spread across the school year.  Year 5 will be the first cohort to be given a task to complete at home over the next half-term.  The details will be shared with the children after the half-term holiday.  The idea is to support the development of the softer skills that children require as they move through primary school and on to secondary school.  These are typically research-led and with additional guidance and support, provide children with a broad topic and an opportunity to produce a piece of work of their choice.  This could be a piece of writing, a piece of artwork, a photograph or any medium in which the child has an interest.  Please do not think that this is a task that parents and grandparents are needed and required to design, build and construct and take hours of effort and worry.  This is an opportunity for you to talk to your child about the task and offer support and guidance but must be completed by the child themselves.  More details to follow.

Dates for your Diary

Our Halloween Disco is next week Thursday 23 October and the details have been sent to you via ParentMail.  The RFA have worked really hard and we will look forward to a fun time with the children next week.

Although we are yet to have half-term break, the Christmas season will be upon us before we know.  Our Christmas Fayre will be on Friday 5 December and more information will be provided via the RFA as to what that will entail.  I can confirm that the non-uniform day for children will be on Friday 21 November.  Children will be able to come to school that day wearing their own choice of clothes in exchange for a donation for our Christmas Fayre. Please could we ask for donations of bottles and / or chocolates for this important fundraising event.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Mrs Gilbert is the Designated Safeguarding Lead and any concerns should be shared with her or the Deputy Safeguarding Leads – Mrs Hadley and Mrs Morley.  Where child protection concerns are raised, the school has a statutory duty to refer these concerns to children’s social care.

And finally...

A reminder that our uniform will change after half-term to the winter uniform policy.  if you have any questions, please do contact the school office.  Please could I also remind everyone that the school playground equipment is only to be used by the children when supervised by members of staff at morning break and lunchtime, not before or after school.

I hope you have an enjoyable and restful half-term holiday when it finally comes and look forward to welcoming your children back to school at the usual time on Monday, 3 November.

Kind regards

Mrs C Gilbert
