A message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope that you all enjoyed the long weekend. After a couple of unusual weeks with Bank Holidays and Elections, it is now back to routine - for a couple of weeks at least! For our Year 6 pupils it has been straight back to it with their End of Key Stage 2 SATs tests this week. We are all incredibly proud of each and every one of them, not only for their hard work in preparing, but for their incredibly mature approach to the test. Special thanks too, go to the staff who have taught the children (not only in Year 6 but throughout their time in school), the support staff who helped ensure that the tests ran smoothly and to everyone who gave the children such a good start to each day with the SATs Breakfast.

Last week we held our Coronation Party. There was a wonderful atmosphere as the children enjoyed the entertainment and refreshments. Even the weather was kind, with the rain only starting as we prepared to head in at the end of the afternoon. We hope you have been able to view some of the photos from the afternoon on our website. Big thanks to the members of the Ridge Friends Association who made it happen. We look forward to hearing how your Coronation Postcards grow!

Next week we have our Amble Ramble (see below). We look forward to coming together again for what is always a highlight of the year.

Kind regards

Mrs D Hudson

Headteacher

Amble Ramble - Friday 19th May. 10.00 am.

Our annual ‘Amble Ramble’ is a sponsored walk in fancy dress around the local area, which raises money to enhance our school. This year’s project is to raise funds to enable us to develop the bungalow garden to create a space for children to grow fruit and vegetables but also to spend time, relaxing and enjoying being outside and learning about nature.  The money raised by this year’s Amble Ramble will enhance the fund raising of the Ridge Friends Association and will be used for landscaping, to build raised beds, purchase a greenhouse, plants, tools and benches. This is an ambitious project but we are looking forward to seeing our ideas become reality.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Our very own 'Crown for a King' competition winner!

Huge congratulations to Maggie in Year 2 who came runner up in Suzanne Webb MP's 'A Crown for a King' competition! Her amazing design will feature on a card being sent to King Charles III to congratulate him on his coronation!

We're so proud of you Maggie!!

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Mrs Hudson is the Designated Safeguarding Lead and any concerns should be shared with her or the Deputy Safeguarding Leads – Mrs Hadley and Miss Beddoes.  Where child protection concerns are raised, the school has a statutory duty to refer these concerns to children’s social care.

We have recently been made aware of a couple of cases of children sending unkind messages to others on social media platforms.

Responsible use of social media is an important part of our PSHE Curriculum and is embedded in our school rules – Ready, Respectful and Safe. Next week, Years 5 and 6 will be visited by Heather Jeavons from RM, who will be presenting workshops to Years 5 and 6 on Cyber Bullying.

We would ask that parents and carers reinforce these messages at home and take an active role in monitoring children’s use of social media.

Mental Health Awareness Week - 15th to 21st May

Mental Health Awareness Week is an ideal time for us all to think about mental health, tackle stigma, and find out how we can create a society that prevents mental health problems from developing. The focus for this year’s Mental Health Awareness week is ‘anxiety’ and in school, staff have had the first of two training sessions about anxiety in children and how we can offer further support to those experiencing this.  Focusing on the theme next week, we hope to increase the children's awareness and understanding of anxiety and provide information on the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem.

Neurofibromatosis Awareness Day is also observed next week, on Wednesday 17th May. We will also be rising awareness of this condition, which impacts on members of our school community.

The children will be designing wrist bands at school next week, in support of both of these hugely important events. We are really looking forward to seeing their artistic license and designs! We also hope to achieve a real sense of unity across the school, promoting open conversation and developing understanding.
